Birth of foreigners in Türkiye

1- Things that foreign citizens should know if giving birth in Türkiye

Registration of new births is an important responsibility of foreigners residing in Turkey. Birth registration is an official procedure followed by the state to register the birth of a child according to the relevant administrative stages and clarifies the official identity of the child and his relationship with the state to which he belongs. New births in Turkey must be notified to the civil corps directorates affiliated with the Office of Civil Affairs. The governor within a maximum of 30 days. On the other hand, registering the birth is an insufficient reason to grant Turkish citizenship to the newborn, as the stages of birth registration take place differently from the stages of individuals acquiring Turkish citizenship.


2- Soul procedures for a newborn born to a foreign father or mother

Foreign citizens must realize the importance of immigration procedures for a new foreign child born to a foreign father or a foreign mother, or in both cases. When the father is a foreigner and the mother is a Turkish citizen, the newborn acquires Turkish citizenship directly, and if the mother is a foreigner and the father is a Turkish citizen, the child also acquires citizenship. Turkish citizenship and obtains the personal card directly. In this case, there will be no obstacle to the child acquiring Turkish citizenship and obtaining the personal card after birth.


3- Acquiring Turkish citizenship through origin and lineage

In order to obtain Turkish citizenship by origin and lineage, some conditions must be met that guarantee proof of the fact of lineage. If origin and lineage are proven, no obstacle will be created for the newborn to acquire Turkish citizenship and an ID card. In order for a child acquired to Turkish citizenship by origin and lineage to obtain an ID card, he must be notified. The concerned authorities within a maximum of 30 days.


4- Documents required to obtain Turkish citizenship by origin and lineage

· Application form

· Two personal photos (biometric)

· A population registration document for the father or mother who holds Turkish citizenship

· Personal document of the foreign father or mother proving nationality and affiliation (must be translated and certified by a notary public)

· The personal document proving the second nationality of the applicant for Turkish citizenship if he holds another nationality (it must be translated and certified by a notary public)

A document proving the marital status of the applicant for Turkish citizenship, a marriage document if he is married, a divorce document if he is divorced, and a death document for the other party if he/she is a widower.

· A transcript of a statement signed by the foreigner’s relatives in the event of the death of the applicant’s father

· Birth certificate (must be translated and certified by a notary)

· Birth report

· Other documents specified by the Ministry of Interior to verify the validity of nationality

If it is proven that the applicant for Turkish citizenship is of Turkish origin and lineage, a family tree will be organized for him by the Ministry of Interior, but if the matter is not proven, the application will be rejected.


5- Granting Turkish citizenship and identity to a child born in Türkiye without acquiring any citizenship by origin and lineage

A child born in Turkey without obtaining the citizenship of any country coming from the father or mother is considered a Turkish citizen and acquires Turkish citizenship directly. In this case, the child who becomes a Turkish citizen will also be granted an identity card, but merely being born in Turkey is not considered sufficient to obtain citizenship. Turkish citizenship, as the newborn’s right to acquire Turkish citizenship must be proven first, but for a newborn who acquires Turkish citizenship, there is no obstacle to obtaining a Turkish identity card.

Foreigners do not acquire the right to acquire Turkish citizenship simply by giving birth in Turkey, but if the parents of the newborn are not determined or his parents are stateless or if the child acquires Turkish citizenship through one of the parents, the child will be considered a Turkish citizen immediately after birth, and also when the newborn does not acquire Turkish citizenship. Citizenship of any other country at birth is also considered a Turkish citizen, as children in Turkey without parents and without acquiring the citizenship of any other country are considered Turkish citizens until proven otherwise.


6- Documents required to apply for Turkish citizenship in the event of birth in Türkiye

· Application form

· Two personal photos (biometric)

· A birth certificate proving the applicant’s birth in Türkiye

· Birth report

· A document proving the state of statelessness in the event that the newborn is stateless (it must be translated and certified by a notary public)

· A document proving statelessness if the parents are stateless
